Three quarters of the ingredients in Virkon S are inorganic substances, which naturally break down in the environment into simple inorganic salts. The rest, the organic compounds, are classified as biodegradable according to the test standards.

Virkon S oxidizes the sulfur bonds in proteins and enzymes, interrupting the function of the cell membrane, causing the cell wall to break. There is no evidence to suggest that disease-causing bacteria develop resistance to Virkon S compared to other types of disinfectants.
