DESCRIPTION
Prospect Kanamycin sulfate h, ophthalmic ointment

Indications
Acute inflammatory processes of the anterior ocular pole (in chronic ones the ointment is less effective); ulcerosquamous and ulcerocrustic blepharitis, allergic conjunctivitis, flictenular kerato-conjunctivitis, nonspecific superficial keratitis, traumatic keratitis, sclero-keratitis, episcleritis.

Doses and method of administration
At the beginning of the treatment, in severe forms of eye inflammation, a small amount of ointment is inserted into the conjunctival sac with a spatula, repeating the procedure at 1 hour during the day and at 2 hours at night. As soon as the acuity of the inflammatory phenomena attenuates, it is possible to switch to 3-4 applications per day (possibly under the dressing, which is maintained for 30 minutes).
Therapeutic action
Kanamycin, an antibiotic in the aminoglycoside group, has a wide spectrum of action. hydrocortisone is a glucocorticoid with anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic action. By combining kanamycin with hydrocortisone, the danger of masking a possible microbial infection is eliminated, as is the case with the use of ophthalmic ointments that contain only hydrocortisone. In the component of the ophthalmic ointment, both kanamycin and alcohol hydrocortisone, act strictly locally, without systemic effects. In local application to the eye, hydrocortisone causes rapid disappearance of pain and photophobia, especially in corneal lesions. The substance removes other aspects of the inflammatory process such as hyperemia, cell infiltration, corneal vascularization and fibroblastic proliferation (fighting the latter, prevents simblefaron in thermal and chemical eye burns).

Composition
Kanamycin sulfate (corresponding to 0.3 - 0.4 g base) 0.5 g
Hydrocortisone alcohol 1.0 g
Anhydrous lanolin 4.0 g
White Vaseline 84.5 g
Paraffin oil 10.0 g

Contraindications
The ointment is contraindicated in tuberculous and fungal diseases of the eye, also in its acute suppurations. Other contraindications are certain viral infections (corneal herpes, lesions caused by vaccine or chickenpox), simple or suppurative corneal ulcers, glaucoma, a history of hypersensitivity to any of the components of the ointment.

Side effects
Although the tolerance of the ointment is generally good, irritating or sensitizing phenomena may occur, requiring discontinuation of treatment. In case of prolonged use, there may be (rarely) the formation of a posterior subcapsular cataract or increased intraocular pressure in some cases.
